Down by the wayside – Paints the picture of the very busy life people have in their family. Parents become so exhausted leading their lives and experiencing their children’s lives so deeply while knowing they must inevitably let them go. The parents themselves have often become shadows of who they used to be in their youth in the long process of nurturing the ones they love.
lyrics
Down by the wayside
You’ve got me walking and filling in spaces
between what is often empty embraces
We oil the parts as they keep on running the show
Serve up the laughter on shiny white plates
This chipped ever after is not going to break
Cause we’ll manage to mend every harrowing crack in the wall
And our shadows barely touch at all
Pale reminders of just who we were
Down by the wayside we wait
With our weights
mmmmm….
Lists that need tending
While children are scheming
We capture the minutes before this new ending
We try to imagine but cannot quite open that door
Shelves overflowing and dripping with memories
No time to reflect while the train is still chugging
You push yourself to hear the voices that still fill the hall
And our shadows barely touch at all….
